As the only tea plantation that is open to the public, Gunung Mas is a unique natural tourist attraction and must be visited. Gunung Mas is at an altitude of 800-1,200 meters above sea level. With cool temperatures, 12-22 degrees Celsius, many Jakarta residents want to enjoy tourist attractions located in Puncak, Bogor.
History
The tea plantation area managed by PT Perkebunan Nasional VIII originates from a tea plantation company owned by the Dutch Government. After Indonesian independence, assets from plantation companies were handed over to the Indonesian Government. Many foreign tourists, especially from the Netherlands, visit Gunung Mas because they want to learn their family history. Their grandparents had lived and worked on this plantation.
Tea plantations in the Puncak area began to appear since the 1800s. Under the management of the Dutch, labor came from outside the area. They are employed to prepare land and plant tea trees in the Puncak area. Settlements and neighborhood roads have begun to appear around the tea plantation area. There have been social changes in the community in the Puncak area since the existence of the tea garden. The villas began to be built because of the cool air and panoramic beauty in the Puncak area. At present, Puncak is progressing further. Tea plantations which were originally the center of activity in the Puncak area, now only become one of the many choices of tourist attractions in the region.
Several restructuring of plantation management occurred between 1957 and 1990s. In 1996, PT Perkebunan Nusantara XI, XII, and XIII were merged into PT Perkebunan Nusantara VIII (Persero). PTPN VIII was restructured again in 2020 to improve company efficiency and performance.
